Today was the final day to work on the essays! We took a quick quiz over the vocabulary terms from last week's syntax/diction day and then worked on finalizing our group synthesis essays. Students were instructed to have one person from their group submit whatever work they had completed prior to leaving class. Periods 2 and 4: Don't forget that your IRB Project is due by 11:39 Sunday night! FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We took our quiz over the four types of love that were covered in the notes on Monday. Following the quiz, we had time to work on our MLK Assembly posters, study for classes, work on assignments, and/or perform an act of service.

We continued working on our essays! Students in all classes were given time to continue shaping their thinking about a bias and how it impacts our perception of the world. The submission window closes tomorrow at 12:50 (they MUST be submitted before the last bell rings). Just a reminder, we have a quiz tomorrow over last week's syntax/diction day terms. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Ms. Rogers had most of the aftermath of the Food Drive already cleaned-up by the time 5th period started, so we did not serve as her minions today. Instead, we outlined posters for the MLK assembly. Each student was responsible for creating two large posters: quote Dr. King and give details about the assembly so that people know it's coming! We will have the opportunity to continue working on those tomorrow is there is no homework to be completed, but they will be the focus when we get back from Winter Break. ENGLISH 2
Periods 1 and 2 had all period to process and make adjustments to our essays. I had students switch work and make comments and suggestions for maintaining formal register as well as having a smooth flow in writing. After the peer edits, students were to go back through their writing and make adjustments as well as add content to their paragraphs. Groups were also instructed to begin working on a conclusion paragraph if they got that far today. Here are the DIRECTIONS AND PROCESS we went through today. They were very straight-forward today. Periods 4 and 6 were tasked with helping with the food drive sorting. Fourth period had about 20 minutes to make suggestions and comments regarding maintaining formal register as well as having a smooth flow in writing, but we then went to the gym to help unload the truck from Safeway. Sixth period was in the gym all period. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP FOOD DRIVE SORTING DAY!!!!! We checked-in at the classroom and then went down to the gym to help with sorting the all of the food donated over the course of the past two weeks! There are no slides or documents for any of today's classes.
ENGLISH 2 Today's essay writing focus was having a solid essay outline to clearly understand where each group was going. Since we will be working on each others' papers tomorrow, we needed to make sure that we had a solid first draft of our body paragraph completed. Students: Please use one of your extended writes to build from if you are struggling to write a draft. Also: I have provided links to ALL of the documents and videos we have watched in class for this assignment. They are under the English 2 tab of this website! FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We finished "The Butterfly Circus" clip and discussed the presence of Agape. Students were instructed to explain the significance behind one of the quotes they chose and some students, along with me, shared which specific quote stood out to them the most. ENGLISH 2
IT IS FINALLY ESSAY WEEK! Today's task was to make sure that we start organizing our thinking and make sure that we knew which bias each group member is in charge of discussing in the essay. Groups got their introduction rough drafts back from their work a couple of weeks ago and decided who was covering each bias to support their thesis. There was no specific handout, but all of the documents and videos that we have used in our class work over the course of the unit is linked under the English 2 tab above. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We took a few notes today and viewed a portion of "The Butterfly Circus." The notes and link to the video will be posted late today when I have access to the time-stamp and images of the notes. ENGLISH 2
It was syntax/diction day #7!! We first quizzed over last week's words--humanitarian, harbinger, non sequitur, unencumbered, and scurrilous--and then took down this week's NEW TERMS. All information on the new terms are in the link provided here, and anyone who wishes to retake or make-up today's quiz must do so prior to next Friday. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP I conducted grade checks and met with some students independently. Students checked-in with which class they were working on and had the period for academics. I tried, but I could not shake the head cold that I felt coming on yesterday. Please treat the substitute with the utmost respect and I will *hopefully* see you all tomorrow!
ENGLISH 2 All directions are provided HERE. Quick overview: Students are to take down some expectations of the essay; then they are to work with their group members to pick who will cover which text(s). Each source can only be used by one student per essay, so you will need to discuss and agree on which sources you each feel comfortable. I had intended to hand back the drafted introduction paragraphs from last week, but they are currently not accessible to you all. Please work together to redraft your introduction with the requirements provided in the slides. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Students need to log-in to their computers and continue working on their Martin Luther King Jr. assembly pieces. The two groups working on emails should have a complete paragraph (or more) written in point 12 font. If anyone misuses the computers or does not use his/her time wisely, they need to work on other classwork or read independently instead of using this opportunity appropriately. ENGLISH 2
It was extended write day! In order to fully prepare for the essay tomorrow, we bumped the extended write to today. Here is the PRESENTATION with the discussion prompts, extended write prompt(s), and my sample writing for the writing prompt for "An Indian Father's Plea." FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP I brought back a report from my meeting with Principal Woods concerning the outline and proposals. Students signed-up for specific jobs within the MLK Jr. assembly. Some students worked toward their selected committees while others chose to misuse their class time. ENGLISH 2
To start the period, I shared a little bit of information I got from the training I was at yesterday. For starters, here is a VIDEO overviewing the success that Everett High School has had with the starting of using their new devices so far. The devices in the video are the same as the ones we will be getting next year. We then broke-down what classes accomplished while I was at my training. Students received their worksheets from identifying the structure of an argument in "An Indian Father's Plea" and were informed that they can finish for a higher grade if they would like to. Students were then informed to discuss which bias(es) they saw most strongly represented in the text from yesterday, discuss those with a partner, and find specific evidence to highlight that bias. It was brought to my attention that not everyone was able to get the notes completed yesterday, so here is the link to those NOTES. Honors Classes: We also started looking these TWO TEXTS concerning bias against elements of higher education. Students were to work together to figure out what aspect was showing bias and prepare to share with their essay group. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We over-viewed the information gathered during yesterday's speech researching. I went over the suggestions that I have gathered from some of you as well as others who have done similar assemblies. I am meeting with Principal Woods this week to get approval on the outline we want. After the assembly work, we got to play Santa for some 2nd grade students at Cathcart Elementary School! Ms. McGrath over in Snohomish had her students write letters to Santa, and we will be replying to them. Each student in leadership was given a couple of letters to respond to and instructed to LEGIBLY write a response to the students. GENERAL NOTE TO ALL CLASSES
Hello everyone! I am out at a training today--as I announced last week--and you have a guest teacher to guide you through today's notes and activities. The food drive has hit my first period in full force and things might be a little tight in terms of movement and space; please be respectful of the room and everyone in it as I could not be in to organize the donations brought-in from over the weekend. I trust that 1st period has done a splendid job at sorting and organizing the items into boxes. Please leave the food items in their respective locations. Also, I talked to each class last Friday about making sure we complete all work and follow the directions of the substitute: the directions she give are provided by me, so if you don't like them, take-up the concern when I get back tomorrow and do not give her any grief. If there are any qualms, questions, comments, or concerns, please bring those to me when I get back tomorrow. I know that we typically take quite a few notes on Mondays, but there are not too many to notes to take down today. Instead, we took-down notes outlining the structure of an argument in order to later identify the structural components in our sample text as well as in own writing. We will be referencing this outline both for this synthesis essay as well as the assessment we work toward after break. After taking down notes, students were instructed to get into their essay groups and read "An Indian Father's Plea" on pages 95-99 in our SpringBoard books. Along with reading the text, students were to mark it for elements of bias as well as the structural elements of an argument. Students also had a WORKSHEET to complete identifying the structure of an argument in the text. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today is the first day of planning the MLK Jr. Assembly. I have set-up a DOCUMENT that outlines the needs of today's work. Students are to look for speeches that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave in his drive for equality. I have provided a sample of what you should include for your proposal. You are not allowed to look into the same speech as one of your classmates: everyone has to look at different speeches! Once you finish looking into speeches, you are to work on homework. If you have no homework, you are to read a book. |
