Today is the day: final reading test on Into the Wild!!! English 2 Honors Students! You will be working on each others' essays today. Please get a computer, pull-up your essay, and switch computers with someone else. Read through the entire essay once without marking anything. During your second read-through, please BOLD AND UNDERLINE each of the following components in the body paragraphs: -explanation of conflict that the character faces -explanation of theme -application of theme to today's culture After identifying all of these aspects, go through the essay with your partner and discuss anything that was confusing as you were reading through. Also point out any part that may have been missing from the list above. The primary goal of today is to make sure that all of these aspects are covered in the essay. Once you finish your discussion, please work on clarifying and/or adding to your essay. Health Students are to get their worksheets back from yesterday and sit in their assigned seats. At the end of class yesterday, we discussed what our recommended caloric intake would be based on our gender and level of activity. This will help us figure out the next step of the worksheet. We are going to figure out how much of our daily diet each of the food items takes up! For each of the components that address calories, figure out what percentage of your caloric intake this product would be. Example: If there were 9 grams of fats total, that means that there are 81 calories of fat. If my recommended caloric intake is 1,800 calories a day, I would take 81 and divide it by 1,800. This gives me a result of 0.045. By converting to a percentage, that means that the only fats in this product per serving use 4.5% of my recommended daily calories to burn off. I know that this might be a little tough for some of you to organize, but try walking through it with all of the fats (9 calories per gram), proteins (4 calories per gram), and carbohydrates (4 calories per gram). Once you have converted these three categories, I would like you to respond to these prompts in FULL SENTENCES on the back of your worksheet: 1) How many servings of this product would you typically eat in one sitting? 2) How many total calories would that be, and what percentage of your recommended calories would that take-up? 3) Realistically, how likely do you think it is that individuals would only eat one serving of each of these products in one sitting? 4) How might your answer to question three impact someone's daily caloric intake? Once you finish this activity, turn your worksheet in to the wire bin on the counter and get a food log from the substitute. You are to complete two days of logging your food for this unit; that's right, only two days. We will be using this information on Thursday, so please take a seat and complete the chart for what you have eaten so far today. You should finish the log tomorrow. We are in the library tomorrow for another guest speaker. Please report directly to the library for 6th period tomorrow, not to the classroom. English 3
Final study day! Well, it was after I lectured the class on the concept of responsibility. Students had until 3:00pm to submit their essay to prevent it from negatively impacting their grade in a detrimental way. We spent about 20-25 minutes playing through a Kahoot to refresh our memories on the events that took place in Into the Wild. All of the information covered in this Kahoot is represented on tomorrow's test in at least one prompt. English 2 Honors Today was all about our THESIS! We walked through a few different ways to build a strong thesis and I worked with the class to create a couple of sentence skeletons that you can use when drafting your thesis. The key is this: make sure you respond to ALL THREE aspects needed. The three components are: -Character of focus -Conflict that character is responding to -Theme that is shows because of this character Health It was a flustering day of food labels! We looked at two different food labels and recorded different data on each. This information will be used throughout the remainder of the week. English 3
Time to finish our personal narrative essays! We were in the library alcove and had the last of our in-class time to work on our essays. Essays are due today, but I will accept adjustments until Monday morning. Students must submit to turnitin.com by Monday morning to earn full credit. English 2 Honors Type those essays!!!! You must submit your literary analyses to turnitin.com before the end of the period. Health After recapping yesterday's presentation, we learned about food labels and the components that companies are required by law to have clearly posted; here are the notes we took over food labels. We took the final reading quiz today over chapter 18. The whole-book test is next Tuesday, but this was the final short quiz. After the quiz, students were given an opportunity to ask questions about the essay process and finalize anything they would like to add to their narrative tomorrow. We primarily looked at how the essay should be formatted. Here is a sample that has some directions typed out and gibberish as a placeholder for the essay itself. Here is MY sample. Please note, these essays do not need to be perfect, but do need to be coherent. English 2 Honors Today was all about typing up rough drafts of our literary analysis essays. Students had the whole period to ask questions and type-out their essays. I suggested that students follow the outlining document they completed yesterday, but some students may work better with other typing and organization methods. Health GUEST SPEAKER DAY! "The Organ Lady" came for her presentation on the impact that poor habits can have on the human body. English 3
We were in the library alcove typing-up our narrative essays today. I gave each student their essay outline that was turned-in yesterday and looked over by me. Student had the entirety of the period to type their essay and ask me any questions they may have had. English 2 Honors Student were given the majority of the class period to complete this essay pre-work. The worksheet outlines and prompts students to consider each component of the analysis for Things Fall Apart. Health Although we were a little rowdy, I recapped yesterday's notes that were provided by the substitute and clarified any lingering questions students had concerning the material on protein, carbohydrates, and fats. After the recap, we covered today's topics: sodium and calories! While I'm at IKE working with 8th grade students and their parents, you will be working with the substitute. Please follow the directions provided here and complete all tasks to the best of your ability.
English 3 The substitute has more of the essay outline worksheets. If you lost yours or did not get one yesterday, please get one from the substitute. These are due before you leave class. Once you finish this document, I expect you to begin writing your essay. Most of you have expressed how difficult this essay will be for you, so I expect that you use this time wisely to think through how you will word and organize this essay. I am giving you more than enough time for each step. You have two options on how to do this: 1) Hand-write the essay and hold-on to it for tomorrow's typing. 2) Create a new GoogleDocument and SHARE IT WITH ME. You have access to the classroom computers as well as those of you who have the GoogleDoc app on your phone. If you are using your phone during class, I expect to have a document shared with me. Anyone who is on their phones the whole period but does not show progressed toward your essay will meet with me tomorrow when I get back. English 2 Honors You have your final reading test today! You will not be grading these in-class due to the short- and long-response portions. Once you are done with your test, please turn it in to Alex the TA and get an essay organizer document from the substitute. This is a working period to start figuring out the content of your essay. Health Here are the notes to be covered in class today. Please listen to the substitute and provide as much input to the discussion as possible. English 3
After talking through the essay prompt and requirements, students had the majority of the class period to select their essay topic and begin working on the outlining worksheet. English 2 Honors We broke-down the writing assignment that we will be working toward between now and Spring Break. Click here for the assignment requirements and outline. After diving-in to what the essay will look at, we started thinking about a few different characters we could analyze for this assignment. I had students create a table like this on the back of their essay requirements document. Students were responsible for identifying three characters who showed considerable reaction to conflict in the book. Health We finished the "Dear Stressed and Depressed" assessment and I gave a brief overview of the next unit of study: Nutrition! English 3
We quizzed over chapters 16 and 17 of Into the Wild. English 2 Honors Such great discussion today! We revisited the concept of a tragic hero and applied the requirements to Okonkwo. As we discussed, we tried to think about how Okonkwo wasn't actually a horrible person but that he actually had held a great example of what was prided in their society. Health Today, we started the "Dear Stressed and Depressed" mental health unit cap. All students did a fantastic job and were very focused. We will have up to 30 minutes on Monday for you to complete the assessment if you did not finish today. English 3
