Today was a LIF with an assembly added-on, so we had shortened periods.
ENGLISH 2 We went over the protocol and structure for our Friday Syntax/Diction days as well as started diving-in to some new terms. I have a picture of my NOTEBOOK to show how the material should look in our notebooks, and I also have the SLIDES with instructions and our terms from today so you can see how the information will be presented to the class each week. Next Friday, we will have a quiz over the four terms we learned today and we will learn five new terms in addition to the quiz. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today was our first technical quiz other than our prior name quizzes. We recapped the personality v. character information and and the strengths of different personality types.

We used our Springboard resource today to read the essay "Ethnic Hash" by Patricia Williams. This essay serves as a GREAT example of a cultural identity essay because Williams uses a metaphor to explain the personal anecdote of thinking about ethnicity and food. Because ethnicity (and often race... they're different) often plays a large role in how people define themselves, this was a fitting first-choice of an example. After reading the text to understand it, we completed a quick write concerning our own personal identities in relation to race. For the directions and writing prompt, clicker HERE. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We were finally able to get into our committees and started thinking about how we can serve our school as student leaders. The campus improvement team (Mr. Cleans) worked through a plan to help clean-up campus after 2nd lunches once a week. The School of P.R.I.D.E. team figured out a few ways that we can boost morale at CHS, including proposing the idea of playing music during passing periods! ENGLISH 2
We worked on looking at different pieces of our culture and how we share elements and have differing elements than some of our classmates. Here is the page of my NOTEBOOK with the directions for today's work. For the directions in digital format, click HERE. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP For the majority of the class, we referenced the final six pages of THIS document. There were several steps we took today, and all of them dealt with looking at our personality traits and how knowing them can help us when interacting with one another in groups. ENGLISH 2
Today was our day learning about the library and all of the resources available to us here at CHS. We took a presentation 'quiz' as Mrs. Pimenta went through the information. Students then had a bit of time to check-out books for their independent reading projects that will be further explained tomorrow. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP As per our usual Monday structure, it's notes and activity day! We started looking at personality vs. character and how we can develop our character. After taking these notes, we had a small activity that had students moving around the room to identify their level of character development on small tasks, then watched a video to learn even more about the importance of practicing to build a skill. Before leaving for the day, we reviewed the TRFs for tomorrow's tutorials. ENGLISH 2
Today was the final day of our first unit! Students had time to complete the gallery walk and SELF REFLECTION documents for the museum exhibits that we have been working on this week. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Name quiz retake day! several of you received 100%, so you're all set! We will continue to have these quizzes until everyone knows each other's names. We discussed the proper way of stepping-in to classes while deliver the planners. Students were partnered-up and took stacks of planners to teachers all across campus! Those who finished early were then instructed to create a name tent to use during class from now on to help us remember all students' names in the class. ENGLISH 2
Students had most of the period to write their captions and finish their museum exhibit projects. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We first took notes on the tutorial process that we will be following this semester and looked at the TRFs. The tutorial process will take place every Tuesday beginning next week. ENGLISH 2
Students had the entirety of the class period to work on their group museum exhibit artifacts. The captions will be developed on tomorrow. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Time to figure out what kind of leaders we are! We completed a personality survey that helped us identify what our leadership style is. After that, we took just a few notes on the difference between personality and character. ENGLISH 2
Students had the entirety of the class period to work on their group museum exhibit artifacts. The bare minimum required to have completed by the end of the period were:
The captions will be developed on Thursday. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We first took notes on the tutorial process that we will be following this semester and looked at the TRFs. Because students have not had an opportunity to complete a TRF prior to today's class, we will begin tutorials next Tuesday. We also took advantage of the fact that this week is homecoming hallway decoration week and drafted an idea of how to decorate the freshman hallway. ENGLISH 2
We defined the terms "central idea" and "theme" before applying those terms to the text, A Thousand Splendid Suns in our notes HERE and HERE. Groups narrowed-down their list of five commonalities between their selected characters to only three. After completing this step, groups then drafted and agreed on a theme statement that we learn from these characters' commonalities. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We took a few NOTES today on paradigms. After looking at the concept of paradigms and being mindful and intentional of our beliefs and actions, I went over a few details concerning the committees that we have to choose from for the semester. Students then ranked their committee choices and submitted them; I am using these as a step in the process of solidifying the committees. |
