It was Arena Day, so we didn't actually get to go over much of our content today. I had you all recap what happened with the substitute yesterday and I explained a bit about what my original plan was for yesterday. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We took the name quiz today! Most students did pretty well, but there is still some work to do. We then took some notes on the Cornell style note taking process.

To my classes: Hello everyone, I'm sorry for not being here today. As Ms. Woods mentioned in the announcements, there was a school shooting near Spokane yesterday; I worked in several schools in the area during my time over there at college, and this is impacting me more than I thought it would. While I don't know anyone at Freeman High School, the memories and experiences of being so close to the Marysville shooting have deeply impacted me. I WILL be back tomorrow; I just wanted you all to know that I am a huge advocate for mental health and need to practice that as well. All of the information is here (as usual) including a few other pieces to help the substitute. Please treat him/her with the utmost respect and leave me any questions you may have. The class outlines are provided below. -Miss Clark ENGLISH 2
Seating Charts Last week I got a gauge of where we are at with our knowledge of certain literary terms, but I also need to know how you write! We are working with our partners/groups for the first portion of the period to make sure everyone's on the same page and understands which characters and traits will be compared in our project. After working with your groups, everyone is expected to go back to their assigned seats. EACH student will explain their understanding of these chosen characters. You may listen to music during the independent writing portion, but all phones must be left face-down while you're writing. Anyone using their phone for anything other than music during this time will meet with me when I get back tomorrow. HERE are the slides with the directions for today's work. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We're doing more community building today, but in a more one-on-one way than yesterday. Partner-up with someone you don't know all that well, but you aren't allowed to work with anyone you drew yesterday. Students are interviewing their new BFF and learning about their likes, dislikes, and any quirks that they'd like to share. After about 10 minutes, students are tasked with creating the origin story of their partner's life as a super hero OR villain. Students have about 20-30 minutes to write these fictional (or are they?????) origins using the information they gathered in their interview session. ENGLISH 2
As promised, Wednesdays are typically collaborative days. The class worked in partnerships to identify which traits apply to different characters; then students chose their own groups and narrowed-down to the five best traits that are shared between those characters. HERE are the steps to today's class period, and here are pages ONE and TWO of my notebook to show you a sample of setting-up the first half of the day. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP More activities were completed to try to know each other! We finished the Name Game, worked on some Raccoon Circle challenges, and drew each other as descriptively as possible without looking at the paper on which we were drawing. Our Name Quiz will be on Friday, and we also saw how everyone's name is spelled. ENGLISH 2
We over-viewed the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and looked at four of the seven key characters that we can use in our museum exhibits. The DIRECTIONS were simple, and we only took a few NOTES. We gained most of our conversation from THIS presentation, although we primarily only looked at slides 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today, we got to interact with Houston Craft a little bit before he spoke to the whole school at the assembly. We mostly worked on some interactive skills and tried to break-down the level of discomfort between us and other, unknown CHS students. ENGLISH 2
The first step to succeed is to know where you're going! We dissected the PROMPT and RUBRIC for the first assessment of the year. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We finalized our typical weekly structure that will begin next week. After this, we all got binders and created a cover page that had the question that needs to be asked: What have you done for someone today? Finally, we started a name activity involving motion. We will complete that on Wednesday. Remember, we meet in the GYM tomorrow! **ALL CLASSES**
Remember that all syllabi are due on MONDAY! A Remind101 message is set to go out on Sunday. ENGLISH 2 After running through the typical Friday protocol, students worked on this year's pre-assessment. After having scored the tests, I can say that the average "score" is a 51%. This is GOOD and what I expected. We will take the assessment again (it will count toward your score next time) after we have covered the skills and concepts covered in the questions. Those who were gone for this need to schedule a time to meet with Miss Clark in the next week to take the assessment. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP After a few days in class, we saw what the semester has in-store for us! HERE is a document outlining the projected semester topics and projects. After this, the class began to map-out what the typical week will look like in Freshman Leadership. Each student was given a copy of THIS document and worked with a small group to decide what should be covered each day. Those groups then merged into two mega-groups which then began the process of trying to make adjustments to fit the recommendations of both sides. We will finish this process on Monday, and then jump-in to whichever portion of the week is decided upon for (nearly) all Mondays that follow! ALL CLASSES - English 2, 2 Honors, and Freshman Leadership
Unfortunately, due to the smokey haze that will not leave, we had to scrap our first activity because it was supposed to happen outside. We went over the SYLLABUS for each class. Each group has a section on Remind101 for alerts and announcements. Below are the codes to text for each class. Any code should be sent to the Remind number: 81010 ENGLISH 2 (periods 1 and 6) --> bfckk ENGLISH 2 HONORS (periods 2 and 4) --> 4gf3h FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP (period 5) --> dbbc9f Welcome!!! We had an awesome first day; well, I did. Below, you will find a brief description of what we covered in class today as well as links to the slides that we went over in-class.
Tomorrow is syllabus day, so be prepared to learn about the ins-and-outs of the classroom! ENGLISH 2 To start the year off, we discussed the central theme of the English 2 curriculum: CULTURE! we'll be looking at writing from individuals who represent over a dozen countries and groups of people, so it seemed fitting to think about how we identify ourselves. For the slides we used and an outline of today's class, click HERE. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Most of you were very confused to find this class on your schedule, but you're in the right place. We briefly discussed what SOME aspects of leadership are and that they really do apply to you! HERE is a link to the slides that were used in class today. More clarity and information about the structure of the course are coming tomorrow. |
