We read through my SAMPLE ESSAY today in class and identified which cultural elements I shared. After reading through my essay, students had time to identify which elements they will write about in their essays this week. We will have computers Wednesday through Friday and the essays are due before 2:05 on Friday. No late submissions will be accepted unless students choose to use their one *freebie* late assessment for the semester. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We looked at the Golden Circle and viewed a video explaining what it was. Additionally, we discussed how this concept could potentially apply to our leadership roles within the school. We worked through these DISCUSSION AND NOTES points and completed the belief statement prompt at the end of the presentation.

Today was a sort of "Catch-up" day. Periods 4 and 6 didn't receive last week's vocabulary, so we went through it today in the first part of class. After that, they received the remainder of the period to work on missing assignments, study for other classes, focus on their independent reading book projects, and/or work on their cultural identity essay. Since periods 1 and 2 got the vocab last week, we had the entirety of their period to work on the tasks mentioned above. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today, we watched a couple of videos and talked about starting a movement. We discussed some possible ways of starting a movement at CHS. ENGLISH 2
Today was all about students considering how to grow as writers! All classes were given more time to work on their revision skills with the writing that was assigned yesterday, but we also had computers and access to the feedback from last week's Cultural Identity Write assignment. Students logged-in to their turnitin.com account to see what grammatical suggestions the website had as well as the comments I left on their writing. The purpose of this is to consciously consider potential areas of improvement AS we write instead of only referencing them as an afterthought and revision step; we want to build our thinking of the writing process so that there are fewer comments in the revision steps in the future. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We were in the Activities Center today working toward our Veteran's Day projects. Students have various roles and activities that they are working on for this holiday. There was a chunk of students who are at a stopping point in their projects, so they helped with campus clean-up after lunches. ENGLISH 2
Students had time to complete "step two" on their worksheet from Monday and yesterday, but we also moved-on to a new process. I provided all classes with "STEP THREE" of this assignment. Students are to take their writing from step two and revise it so that the paragraphs flow better. They are allowed to adjust sentence lengths this time around to make the connections better. There is a restriction, however; although they don't need to mimic sentence length, they DO need to mimic the original author's sentence type. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We were in the Activities Center today working toward our Veteran's Day projects. Students have various roles and activities that they are working on for this holiday. I was out at a training on Monday and the substitute never received the class outline. Because of that, we had a bit of a kerfuffle. The information from the original Monday post has been converted to show both Monday and Tuesday work.
ENGLISH 2 We're reviewing the different sentence types that are typically taught 8th grade year; we'll be using the concept of different sentence types and lengths in our next few days. Work through the SENTENCE TYPES NOTES and directions for the PRACTICE WORKSHEET. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Monday: We're working on active listening still! Work through the ACTIVITIES for today's lesson. There are four different steps to complete. Tuesday: We completed tutorials today and each group did great! ENGLISH 2
It was SYNTAX/DICTION day #3! We took a quiz over the five terms from October 6th and learned five more words today! FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We continued our thinking and work toward the Veteran's Day acknowledgements. ENGLISH 2
Some of us had to take some time to do the interviews, but the information from this process could be used in our writing assignment! After reviewing the information we've covered so far, students had some time to begin writing their responses to one or more of the prompts in the SLIDE PRESENTATION. These responses to the prompts were completed in GoogleDocs and submitted them through turnitin.com. Here is the information for my classes on turnitin: Periods 1 and 6: Class ID--> 15587850 Enrollment Key-> Culture Periods 2 and 4: Class ID--> 15587820 Enrollment Key-> Culture Be sure to write at least two paragraphs in response to one or two of the prompts. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today, we began brainstorming how we might be able to highlight and/or acknowledge past and present military personnel for Veteran's Day. We also looked at how to possibly promote the drama production coming up. ENGLISH 2
Some classes are at different places, so some of us may not have gotten through ALL of this information. Most classes went either reviewed or went through the ANECDOTE EXPLANATION worksheet from yesterday and started working through the PARTNER INTERVIEW. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We walked through the final steps of yesterday's tutorial. We looked at different ways to structure writing in an interview and how we might introduce the interview content. After that, we looked at a sample math problem as supplied from some of your teachers to see how we might be able to work TRF questions from a math problem. ENGLISH 2
We continued looking at the structure and organization of the text "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan. Specifically, we looked at the idea of motifs and how using a specific repetition helps convey a specifically intended theme to the reader. For the notes and process of today's class, click HERE and work through he slides by responding in your notebook. Today was very heavily discussion based, but having these responses in your notebook will help when looking back over the information since you may have missed-out on the conversations in-class. After looking at the text some more in reference to the cultural iceberg (again, see slides for the prompts), we began outlining our own anecdote and what that says about our own cultural identity and practices. Here is a digital version of the WORKSHEET we started using in-class. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP As announced for the past week, we had a quiz on the curve of forgetting and the importance of revisiting your notes. Everyone was here for today's quiz, but some found it much easier than others. The primary purpose for this process is to highlight the importance of revisiting our notes for better retention of information; it lessens the waste of the student's time in school and allows for a better understanding of how different concepts are connected. ENGLISH 2
We CONTINUED out conversation about "Two Kinds" today with a focus on understanding some of the structures and organization techniques that Amy Tan used when writing. Tomorrow will come with a more focused approach to really understanding the metaphors and motif used throughout the text. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today was the start of our ACTIVE LISTENING work. We looked at a few required components of actively listening to someone and also practiced some of the skills with a partner in a low-risk conversation. |
