ALL CLASSES
Welp, it's Friday the 13th and none of you are here at the school to have superstitious fears or tribulations! The directions are SIMPLE today: make sure you get sleep and just enjoy your life outside of school! As always, have a great weekend and make good life choices. -Miss C

We dove right back in to the "Two Kinds" text by Amy Tan. Students were broken-up for groups and assigned a chunk of the text to read. Each period is at a slightly different place in the activity, but the SLIDES have each step that the furthest class *cough*FIRST PERIOD*cough* got in the process today. We will continue to work with this text through a large portion of next week. Also... syntax/diction quiz#2 will be next Friday; I'll make more of a deal about it all again when we have a typical schedule next week. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Committees worked on their projects today. Since we're still waiting to hear back about the music idea, the PRIDE Committee got a tour of the Activity Center and started brainstorming how we could bring more awareness to the school about certain PRIDE concepts through posters. The Mr. Cleans went out and picked-up trash from around campus. After finishing this, they sketched ideas for fliers that we could create to promote students cleaning-up campus as a whole. It's the day of 20-minute periods! None of the classes followed their typical structure for the day due to the shortened time-frame, but we did have tasks to complete.
ENGLISH 2 We still have too many students who don't know each other! Today, since it was a funky schedule, we worked on building connections and and networking within the class! There were odd prompts and a couple of challenges, but there is nothing to make-up. Come to class tomorrow prepared to dive back in to "Two Kinds." FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Since we have a binder check tomorrow and a quiz next Tuesday, today was structured to provide you with time to get organized for both of those assessments. ENGLISH 2
We reviewed some of the parallel structure material from yesterday to make sure we really understood it before diving-in to the next text. Additionally, we went over several tips, tricks, aspects, and reminders for tomorrow's PSAT. Make sure you get some rest tonight! After reviewing parallel structure and talking PSAT, we looked at the text "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan; this text can be found in activity 1.5, page 21 of Springboard. We only got through Chunk 1 and worked to summarize the chunk as a class and talked about question 1 on page 30. HERE are the directions and concepts to think about when reading this chunk. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We worked through a video dealing with the curve of forgetfulness and WHY Cornell note skills are so important. Unfortunately, I don't have a public access link to the video, so please see me to get this information and schedule a time in the next couple of days to view the video. ENGLISH 2
We looked at the concepts of parallel structure and how to use it in our writing to make our ideas read smoothly. Here are the SLIDES with the definitions. I added a term to look at halfway through the day, so my notebook pages will reflect that and I'll add that information to the earlier classes tomorrow. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP So many things covered today! HERE are all of the steps we went through and the thinking processes we used. Just a reminder, your first binder check is this Thursday, October 12. ENGLISH 2
It's that time of the week: SYNTAX/DICTION DAY!! We started the period with a quick quiz over last week's terms, then we dove in to this weeks FIVE new terms. These terms will show-up in our texts throughout the next couple of weeks. Here are the slides with this week's NEW TERMS. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today we did some reflecting on how our personality types and traits can help push us to change some characteristics and work toward a goal. We wrote a letter to our future selves, which we will get back at the end of the semester. There are a few specifics for the letter, and all of the information from today's work can be found in THESE slides. After the letter writing, we thought back to the compliment weight analogy that Houston Kraft mentioned when he worked with us last month. I'll be prompting the class on occasion with compliment challenges; the link to a site with a bunch of different compliment outlines is in the slides that are already linked above. ENGLISH 2
Today, we continued looking at the Frida Kahlo text from Springboard's activity 1.6. We first took notes on mimicking and why it helps us in our own writing. For today's notes and a sample of my mimicking of paragraph five on page 34, click HERE. There, you will also find the directions for the two processes students were to complete today! If you need a digital copy of the Springboard text, click through this PRESENTATION with directions on how to access all of the Springboard resources digitally. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP While we wait on responses concerning our committee projects, we are learning about the activity center and all that it holds for us! We met in the classroom, and then we headed to building two to get a quick demonstration on how things work and are set-up in the central hub for all things leadership! We also got to meet Ms. Cooper (aka: The Activities Queen). Turns out that I forgot to click "post" last night after curriculum night, so here is the post I meant to publish!
Here are the SLIDES I went through; if there is any information on the slides that you would like some clarity or deeper understanding of, please feel free to reach-out to me. Also, as promised, here is the link to SPRINGBOARD ONLINE; students can use their student ID # and school password to log-in to the digital textbook! Here is also a STEP-BY-STEP process for logging-in and accessing specific texts and lessons! ENGLISH 2
After recapping yesterday's events and the work that was set to occur, we looked at a text and a video clip about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We looked at these texts to consider how we learn about an individual's cultural identity. For the digital version of this text, log-on to the SPRINGBOARD WEBSITE using your school log-in information (click on the "Login with Clever" box and follow the steps to log-in, then click on the "bookshelf" box, then click on the Grade 10 book). The text is on page 33 of the text in lesson 1.6. If you're confused, see me tomorrow with how to log-in. We'll be covering it tonight at Curriculum Night as well as later in the month. After reading this, we watched a quick VIDEO about Kahlo to learn even more about her. Finally, we revisited the text on page 33 and listened to it to hear more distinct language. Here is a copy of my NOTEBOOK with directions for today's writing. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today was all about us! Well, it was actually about how our selfishness could get in the way and why it's important to not be selfish. HERE is the information we covered and what we took down in our notes. Hello all; I apologize for being gone again. It's been a very tumultuous morning with my voice fully giving out, coughing-up a storm, developing a headache; I seem to have fallen prey to this cold even more so than yesterday. As 6th period experienced yesterday, I'm not my typical, genial self right now; I hate being sick and my patience isn't what it usually is. With that being said, I'm staying home to try to get back to feeling like myself. My goal is that tomorrow is a normal day and I can grace you all with my presence once more. In the meantime, treat the substitute(s) with respect and follow the plans they give you.
ENGLISH 2 Today is about putting into practice what we learned yesterday! The slides for today's directions can be found HERE. You will be reviewing the notes from yesterday, then working on responding to a prompt in the academic sphere of writing; remember to use the grammar and usage rules of the formal language register. I am NOT collecting the writing you do today, but we will be discussing it and I'll be stamping it off tomorrow when I get back. This will be reflected in an added formative assessment grade. Since we're writing today, we're re-configuring the weekly schedule; you won't have an extended write on Thursday. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP It's tutorial Tuesday! Since we went over the process last week, there should be at least a basic understanding of how these tutorials work. Yes, I know that we aren't in AVID, but these skills are FANTASTIC, and working through things in this manner now will have a tremendous impact on how we process things in the future or even help our friends with struggles in school. HERE is the quick overview of the material for the day. |
