Click here to get the prompts for each of these concepts. Health First, we took a quiz. This quiz covered everything from the past two weeks, including mental illnesses, the seven chakra, and meditation techniques. This material directly ties-in to the idea of mental illness due to the fact that suicidal ideations are OFTEN the result of a form of depression or isolation.

We looked at the structure of Into the Wild and discussed the impact that writing out of chronological order may have on someone. We then read my VERY rough draft of an essay and saw how I tried to emulate Krakauer's organization style. The students then practiced writing a paragraph to introduce a significant instance in their lives by first referencing the end of the experience. This was intended to practice the idea of framing in literature and have the introductory topic also be the concluding topic. English 2 Honors After refocuing on yesterady's activity identifying what aspects of the Ibo culture our society may see as 'strange,' we began to identify what components of our society OTHERS may see as being odd or unnecessary. We recorded several components and then wrote out an explanation about why they may thing this. Finally, we wrote about and discussed the following: Why may Achebe may have included positives and negatives of both the Ibo and European cultures in his story? What impact do you think that had on the story? Health We looked at this text and marked it for information that we thought was significant or confusing. Additionally, we talked about the myths addressed in the texts and applied the information we learned during our research project to help disprove those myths. English 3
We looked at Thoreau's Civil Disobedience as a class and discussed how the ideas in this essay aligned and shone through in McCandless' journey. On the reverse of the paper, students were to respond to this prompt: How does Krakauer show the alignment in thinking between McCandless Thoreau? English 2 Honors After our weekly quiz, we looked at the different concepts of the Ibo culture and how it may impact our understanding and thinking about the Ibo people as a whole. Quiz #4 retake and quiz #5 first attempt were today. After the quizzes, we started a discussion toward understanding the meaning of the phrase "civil disobedience" and term "anarchy." This conversation will be continued on Monday with a look at a piece of Thoreau's essay Civil Disobedience. English 2 Honors The concept of civility can be a tricky one to understand, but you all did a great job discussing it! We came up with a class definition of a civil society and applied that to both the Ibo and European cultures from Things Fall Apart. Each student then reflected as to which culture they have perceived as being depicted as more of a civil society in the book. Health There are four main classifications of meditation that are typically used in our society. Today, we learned what those four classifications were, how to conduct a simple version of them, and what the benefits could be. To get those notes, click here. In addition to this, we also practiced some minor meditation techniques and discussed the health benefits that these could have in our own personal lives. English 3
We finished-up the Thoreau analysis and had some time to catch-up on our Into the Wild reading. Tomorrow's quiz will be over chapters 13-15. There will also be a retake/make-up quiz for chapters 10-12. English 2 Honors Students finished group presentations on the values and key components of Ibo culture and then the class had a converstion about some of those components. Health After finishing the recap about different mental illnesses, we learned about the 7 chakras of the body. Click here for those notes. English 3
After finishing the epigraph work from yesterday, we took some time to write an epigraph for our own writing. Pick a quote that has significance when applied to your personal life. Explain what that quote means, and then explain WHY it's important or applicable to your life. We then looked at an excerpt from one of Henry David Thoreau's writing and conducted a close read of it to find its meaning and significance. Thoreau was an influential writer to McCandless, and many of the messages in this writing impacted McCandless' actions. English 2 Honors Independent reading books are new, now! We returned our library books and checked-out new books for our IRB journal assignments. Health Today we finished recapping the information on mental illnesses. To get all of the information to fill-in the handout before the quiz, click here. English 3
Today was quiz day. Students took quiz number four over chapters 10-12 on ITW and also had the opportunity to make-up/retake last week's quiz over chapters 7-9. Additionally, I provided a few resources for audio books that are available for students to use if they choose. Those links are provided under the English 3 tab of this site. English 2 Honors Students began compiling their presentations about aspects significant to Ibo society. I recommend using Prezi, GoogleSlides, or some other source that is easily accessible source that each group member can access at home. The guiding questions for this presentation are under the English 2 Honors tab of this website. Health Students have the class period to continue/finish working on their mental illness brochures. We will present our brochures to the class on Monday. **If you do not get your brochure finished before the end of the period, it is your responsibility to complete it over the weekend. English 3
SAT day! Do your best and don't stress! English 2 Honors I have provided the substitute with this week's reading questions. I decided to only have chapters 16-19 due for Monday. This gives us a nice cut-off for the end of part two of the book. Additionally, I have provided the substitute with the new seating chart that will be effective tomorrow. You are clustered by your assigned groups for this upcoming project. If there are any qualms with this seating chart or your specified group members, please email me or contact me via this site. Other than reading and going through these questions, you also have a writing assignment. In your notebooks, thoroughly respond to the following prompt: What parallels can be drawn between the Ibo culture and ours? Be sure to provide explicit text evidence and draw real-world examples in your explanation. Health Today is quiz day! There are three different portions to today's quiz; complete them to the best of your ability. There will be no notes allowed. You are to complete all aspects of the quiz independently. Upon completing the quiz, please get out whichever book your English class is currently reading and focus on that silently. I'll see you all tomorrow! -Miss Clark |
