We wrapped-up yesterday's conversation about "I Want a Wife" and how the use of satire can help us understand a topic without being explicit about it. After wrapping-up with that text, we turned to the extended metaphor of "What my Bike Taught Me About White Privilege." As we read through the text, we followed the slides in today's PRESENTATION as well as marking the text to identify unknown terms, key details, and evidence of society's bias. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Each partnership shared their historical figure with the class and explained which leadership style (power or influence) those figures used as well as how that was evident in their actions. Following these quick presentations, students completed a three column chart to highlight someone who has made a positive impact on their lives and what that individual had to sacrifice in order to influence their life.

Some classes hadn't quite finished the notes from yesterday, so there are some repeated notes on today's SLIDES. After we completed the notes, we read and analyzed the text "I Want a Wife." We will reference the text again tomorrow and on Thursday, so completing the steps in these slides will be helpful beyond simply knowing what the text is about. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We started working on looking at the difference between the influence-style (wanting to help and make a positive impact) of leadership and power-style (wanting to have control over others for the sake of having control) of leadership. After taking some notes and talking through understanding them, students broke-off into partnerships and did some quick research on a significant leader from the past to identify which style of leadership s/he used. As per our typical weekly structure, it was notes for this wonderful Monday! We looked specifically at EXTENDED METAPHORS AND SATIRE. Our texts this week are examples of these literary techniques, and in order to fully understand the intended purpose, we first need to understand the terms and their roles in literature. None of the classes got all the way through the notes; there are between three and seven slides left for each class. We will start tomorrow with the remainder of the notes and then read a piece of satire that highlights a gender role bias. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We finished our dignity boards and hung up the ones that were able to be hung. We also discussed some changes in our weekly structure. Instead of spending three days a week on notes, one day on tutorials and TRFs, and one day on committee work, we will now work on notes and leadership concepts twice a week, work at promotions and actively leading the school, and one day working on academics and study hall. The reasons for this shift are many, but it is mostly because our class was not functioning to its fullest in the structure we wanted at the start. ENGLISH 2
Today, we got into our essay groups and discussed the information from the documentaries that we watched this week. Below, I have listed a quick reference of how we will work each day of the week for the remainder of the unit with very few exceptions. The discussion and writing prompts for today, as well as the listing of who is in each group, is provided HERE. The writing should be completed in our notebooks and is intended to build a base for the writing we can use in our essays toward the end of the unit. MONDAY: We'll take notes on different concepts and skills that we're working toward in this unit. TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY: reading and looking at different sources to reference and synthesize in our essays. We will typically mark the texts or complete a worksheet to gather evidence and data from each of the sources. These documents will be used for our discussions with our groups and our own writing on Thursdays. THURSDAY: These days are for group meetings and independent writing. We will use the documents that we have gathered over the course of the week to provide information for the synthesis portion of the essay. FRIDAY: We will continue to use this day of the week to build on our syntax and diction. The concepts covered here will help strengthen our writing as well as thinking processes. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We worked in our partnerships to create our bulletin boards today. I approved all of the rough drafts and each group was responsible for creating their board during class. Stefanie, Aleks, and I moved between the different groups to make sure that we were working productively toward our DIGNITY boards. ENGLISH 2
Our classes did a few different things today: take notes on authority and misuse of it, view the documentary about The Stanford Prison Experiment, complete the viewing worksheet. All of the directions and links are provided in the SLIDES for today's outline. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We wrapped-up our Veteran Recognition Project with a REFLECTIVE ASSESSMENT. Each student is responsible for completing this assignment based on his/her own thinking, actions, and opinions on the project. Upon everyone completing this, we launched-in to our next project of influence: Dignity Boards. This project ties-in to the PAWS theme of the month focused on Dignity in our school. The outline and directions for today's work can be found HERE, but the requirements for our bulletin boards are also provided under the "Freshman Leadership" tab of this site. ENGLISH 2
Our classes did a few different things today: look over the unit outline, view the Frontline special, "A Class Divided," complete the viewing worksheet. All of the directions and links are provided in the SLIDES for today's outline. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today we worked on getting the stars up in the cafeteria. We met in the classroom and then walked to the cafeteria to tape the stars up. ENGLISH 2
We began to dissect some of the requirements of our next assessment: Group Synthesis Essay. We walked through each step on the PRESENTATION for the day as well as looked at the UNIT OUTLINE document. The portion of the presentation that asks students to identify different prejudices in our society is intended for the consideration of differences that we may see in our own world. We all have biases and are prejudice for or against different concepts and constructs; I just want to see which of these constructs are more noticeable to each class so that I can mold our sources to the information most prevalent to this specific grouping of students. The due date for this assessment is December 15. Students will have their group assignments on Thursday of this week. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We organized our stars into a representation of the flag to hang-up tomorrow once we have all of the stars in from the classes. After that, we watched part of the Frontline episode titled "A Class Divided." HAPPY NOVEMBER, EVERYONE!
All of my classes are working on projects/large assignments right now. Today, tomorrow, and Friday are being used to complete these assignments, so the processes are the same for each day. ENGLISH 2 We have until 2:05 on Friday to submit our Cultural Identity Essays. I am linking to all of the support documents I have provided in-class; if you need some help getting started or with some organizational aspect, please reach-out to me and let me know. Essay Prompt and Checklist Cultural Iceberg Suggested Outline Document Clark's Sample Essay Honors --> Also remember that your first Independent Reading Project is due by 11:59 Sunday night. I would suggest bringing your book and any notes you have on it to class in case you have time to work on it after you finish your cultural identity essay. FRESHMAN LEASHERSHIP We are using our class time to create posters and fliers to advertise our spirit day next Tuesday as well as the military recognition stars. Stars and directions have been submitted to teachers, so we should begin to get some of those back in the next few days. Also remember that telling friends about these events can be good reminders and spreading of awareness for these events. ENGLISH 2
Today was built-in to help students get a head-start on their essays. We didn't have access to computers today, but we have them the rest of the week. Students were instructed to have at least an outline of their essay figured out by the end of the period so that they can utilize the rest of the week for writing their essay to submit by the end of the day Friday. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We worked on creating posters for the stars and spirit day next week. The rest of this week will be dedicated to working on this project for Veteran's Day recognition. |
