We took a quiz over the sets of commonly confused terms that we have covered the last two Fridays. After the quiz, we started the NEW SET OF TERMS. Most classes only got through one or two sets, and we will continue them next week. LEADERSHIP We continued working on our posters for either World Water Day or welcoming students back from spring break. We will be hanging our posters for World Water Day on Monday.

We spent about half of the class period talking about symbols in Night and what we understood them to mean. We then looked at how we can use recurring symbols to help understand some element(s) of a text's theme. After using Night as a sample, we began looking at how to use symbolism in our OWN writing. We have the EW 3: USING SYMBOLISM worksheet to help guide us through writing out an example of when a tangible object represented something conceptual for us. I also provided students with MY EXAMPLE of this completed worksheet. This assignment should be turned-in by tomorrow if you wish to guarantee it gets graded before the mid-term report cards get sent home. LEADERSHIP ENGLISH 2
In order to make sure that students are successful on the state assessment later this year, we will be taking a couple of days throughout the next month or so to practice and gain exposure to the test. Today, we took a practice test focusing on the art of editing. If a students was gone, I will be scheduling a time for them to come in and take it next week. Once finished with the test, students had time to continue reading Night and working on their storyboard/plot outline. LEADERSHIP We continued our notes and discussion about ACTIVE LISTENING. Specifically, we covered a new acronym today: SPEC. We took just a couple of notes, observed Miss Clark and Nyla hold a conversation while highlighting both SOFTEN and SPEC qualities, then read an article regarding the importance of truly listening to people. Each student then responded and reflected to three prompts on the back of their article. These reflections will be used in a future lesson. ENGLISH 2
Half of the classes needed to complete the notes from yesterday. We looked at multiple types of common and uncommon symbols, as well as talked about story-specific symbols. After completing/revisiting those concepts, some classes took some time to work on looking at the symbolism of fire/flames in the book Night so far. Finally, we began reading chapter five. Starting on page 66, I read through several pages and stopped to discuss the significance of some of the scenes and actions Elie depicts. LEADERSHIP It's all about ACTIVE LISTENING! We took some notes on what it means to actively listen as well as HOW one should go about this practice. Then, well, we practiced! Students learned the "S.O.F.T.E.N." method for active listening and ran through a simulation with a partner. Each student played the role of speaking as well as that of listening. They then had to check-off what their partner did well or missed in the S.O.F.T.E.N. method. We will use this information tomorrow and Friday. ENGLISH 2
Since it's Monday, it was reading quiz day! We started the class period with a quiz over chapters 3 and 4 (pages 26-65). After everyone finished the quiz and we went through the answers together, we began working through our SYMBOLISM NOTES. We defined and explored different levels of symbolism as well as why and how to use it. LEADERSHIP We revisited the idea of selfishness vs. selflessness today with some notes and video viewing. Specifically, we looked at the definition of LEADERSHIP and how we can have influence on anyone! We took down the notes and responded to the questions on today's PRESENTATION. ENGLISH 2
Students completed the syntax work that we started last Friday. We worked through the remainder of the homophones as well as the common mistake of misusing "I" and "me." As a refresher, here are the SYNTAX/DICTION II NOTES from last week. ENGLISH 2
We worked independently on a couple of different things today. First and foremost was making sure that we were reading chapters three and four of Night. If students did not complete the Imagery Technique Worksheet during yesterday's reading, they had until the end of the period before it was considered due. As per usual, missing assignments will be entered in with a zero, but they can be turned-in for an updated grade anytime between now and the end of the unit (March 30). Students also had the option to work on any of the following Night-related tasks:
LEADERSHIP Since we finished with the SAT Snack Project, we had the opportunity to complete a REFLECTION. There are five questions to answer with thorough responses. Since there were still classes taking the SAT and students work at different paces, I also took this opportunity to conduct grade checks with students. I printed out each student's missing assignments from all classes and provided them with a copy. They had time to work independently on academics after they completed their reflection. ALL CLASSES:
At some point in each period, I went over the class displacement for tomorrow's SATs. We will still be using our classroom, but it is CRUCIAL that we enter the building silently TOMORROW as to not disrupt those who are taking the SAT. Most teachers in the building have been moved somewhere else around campus for tomorrow only. Please be sure to pay attention to the signs around campus tomorrow to see where you should go for certain classes typically held in building 6. ENGLISH 2 We are at slightly different places right now, but that is okay! Here is what each class accomplished today: Period 1--> Today we recapped the notes that we took yesterday. This was the only class to get through all notes yesterday, so we had a five-minute entry-task dealing with imagery. All other classes will work through this tomorrow. After the entry-task, we went over a worksheet that we were to complete as the class listened to me read chapter three out loud. I and stopped us occasionally to discuss the different things that were happening as well as where we saw IMPACTFUL imagery. As a class, we got half-way through page 34. Period 2--> We only got through metaphor in our notes yesterday, so we finished-up with personification and its use as an imagery technique. We then skipped the entry-task and dove right in to the worksheet and chapter three or Night. We got through nearly all of page 32 as a class. Period 4--> We only got through hyperbole in our notes yesterday, so we finished-up with metaphor and personification. We then skipped the entry-task and dove right in to the worksheet and chapter three or Night. We got through nearly all of page 32 as a class. Period 6--> We had such a great conversation about school safety and the new procedures that we did not get to the notes yesterday at all. We started at the top of yesterday's notes slides and worked through them fairly quickly. The class ended up getting about half-way through page 32 before the bell rang. LEADERSHIP Today was all about finishing-up the snack bundle preparations and delivering them to the SAT rooms! We took almost the whole period, but we got everything done that we could! Great job, everyone! ENGLISH 2
We had our first reading quiz today. The quiz structure is open-book and -note. These quizzes are simply a form or refreshing our memories about the content of the assigned readings as well as to endure that students keep-up with the pacing. I also handed out the READING SCHEDULE for the remainder of the month. There will be 2-3 chapters of reading per week with class time dedicated for the specific task of reading Night. We then took notes on USING IMAGERY and discussed a couple of different ways to write descriptively. LEADERSHIP We are in full SAT project mode! Students go snacks and bottles of water from the office and we spent the majority of the period bundling those snacks together. We will be finishing the bundles and delivering them to classrooms during class tomorrow. You all worked amazingly today; I really appreciate the patience you all showed while waiting for the snacks to get delivered. ENGLISH 2
We first took an open-note quiz covering the events and time frame of the Holocaust. After that, we started working toward SYNTAX/DICTION II. LEADERSHIP Students viewed a video about Phil Connors and how he progressed to a less selfish individual. We then wrote a letter to our future selfless self. |
