ENGLISH 2
We took down some definitions on literary foils and tragic heroes. After defining and discussing those literary elements, we read the scene "An Epic Foil" in Antigone. This is the first time we meet Haemon, and a snarky banter ensues! Here are the slides with the NOTES AND DISCUSSION questions. LEADERSHIP It was the first day of Link Crew PAWS pass distribution! Students were assigned partnerships and rooms to which they had to deliver passes. Once most groups got back, we started our notes on different communication behaviors, but only got through aggressive communication before our guest speaker, Mrs. Orsillo, and her peer tutor, Mia, came by. Mrs. Orsillo is a speech language pathologist here at CHS who works with several disabled students with communication difficulties. She shared with us several ways to beneficially communicate with individuals who have communication difficulties and how to stay respectful of their humanity; these are students, just like any other CHS teenager. The primary reason for these guest speakers was to think about how our communication skills may impact others. Also, one of our ongoing Service Thursday options will be to play games with the students that Mrs. Orsillo works with.

Many students are out at the Read-A-Thon today, so if you fall into that boat, be sure look through the materials that are posted here today carefully. You have been forewarned on the material, so it should come as no shock to you!
ENGLISH 2 It is time to pick-up with new terms again! Today is SYNTAX/DICTION I. We will use roman numerals for this semester's new terms/concepts just to differentiate from last semester. Since there was no quiz over prior terms, students were given some time to work on their independent reading projects or get caught-up on Antigone if they have missed any days lately. LEADERSHIP Since leadership is all about RELATIONSHIPS, we took a bit of time today to refresh ourselves with everyone's name as well as play a class policy Kahoot! Students got to work in teams to fight for a prize by answering 12 questions about the information in the course syllabus as well as elements around the classroom that are designed to help them succeed. After this, we took our first attempt at the whole-class name test. Student must pass this, so anyone who does not get 100% will not receive credit for it until it has been completed. ENGLISH 2
We completed and over-viewed the scene "Conflicting Motivations" on pages 336-343 of our SpringBoard texts. After ensuring that we had a firm grasp on the events that took place, students were to write a plot summary of the scene in their notebooks. We then conducted our extended writes, but we have a new format. Now, students will complete the top half of each prompt on our EW Sheet (EW=Extended Write) and turn them in to the basket by the assigned due date--typically that day or start of class the following day. LEADERSHIP After our daily name association activity, today was the introduction of "Service Thursdays" (AKA: Serve-Thur). Students got to choose which activity they took place in that is geared toward helping others and leaving a positive impact. During this time, students were encouraged to get to know the others working on their same task a little more and work with someone they did not know very well. Here were the options today:

We continued reading Antigone today. Starting on page 336, begin reading "Conflicting Motivation" and mark the text in areas that help us understand and explain the development of Creon, Ismene, and Antigone. The conflicting motivations of these characters come out in full force today. After completing the this portion of the script, respond to the prompts in our DAILY SLIDES. Not all classes ended in the same place, and that is completely okay! We had some great conversation about the script and character motivations. LEADERSHIP We worked on getting to know each others' names to start off as well as share what we hold as our biggest accomplishment so far. After about 15 minutes of this, we began working on our first service project! We personalized invitations to all freshmen for a Link Crew Meet-up. I have a couple of things that came up and am not at school today. Be sure to respect the substitute (whomever it may be) and follow the directions I have left for you.
ENGLISH 2 Recap what was completed yesterday. Read "Enter the King" beginning on SpringBoard page 326. Students will need to volunteer to read as the characters. There will need readers for the Chorus Leader, Creon, Guard, Chorus. If no one volunteers or follow genial policies, students are to read the script silently and respond to the writing prompts independently and WITHOUT distractions of their phones or music. As you read, mark the text in areas that help us understand the motivations of King Creon and the guard. Working with a partner or independently, respond to the following prompts in your notebook:
LEADERSHIP Partner-up. Introduce yourself to your partner and share your response to the question posed by the teacher; provide an explanation of why you answered this way. After a few minutes, find a new partner (preferably one that you do not know very well), introduce yourselves, and then respond to the new prompt given by the substitute. Go back to your assigned seats and get your Growth Mindset Introductory document from yesterday. Introduce yourself to the class and explain whether or not you agree with the results of your survey. Also pick one thing from your introductory page to highlight and share that with the class. Also, they should turn-in their syllabus if they got it signed over the weekend. Hello all! I am at a meeting all day today--as I said last week--so you are to listen to everything the substitute teacher says. There is a new seating arrangement and chart, and all of the seats are numbered; find your seat number and get cozy!
ENGLISH 2 Today, we completed giving the class our paraphrased sections of "Chorus Lines" from Antigone. Then, overview the events/topics of these first two scenes. You need this refresher for your character sketch of the chorus. Please leave room for a total of seven scene outlines in your notebook. After the plot outlines, write a character sketch for the chorus and chorus leader. Use the information from plot overview to remind you of what they talked about in this scene. You ARE allowed to work with a partner to discuss how you might explain the personality and the role these 'two' characters play in the story. These character sketches should be between three and six sentences and discuss the personality of the group, their role in the story, the mood they set, and how/why they contrast the tone of the first scene. Finally, fully respond to and use to respond to the following prompts in your notebooks: 1) In lines 62-72, why does Ismene recount their family’s history to her sister? What purpose might she have for this reminder? 2) What are the two sisters’ conflicting motivations and how does the script show/tell us this? We will be debriefing these questions tomorrow and using the information throughout the remainder of the unit. LEADERSHIP If you got your syllabus signed, please turn it in. Take the Growth Mindset Survey and complete the math portion to find where you fit in the growth mindset range. The survey portion is to be completed independently and should only take a few minutes. Once students finished the survey, you should read what their results say about you. Complete the worksheet that tells a bit about you and where you can improve in your thinking about growth mindset. You will be sharing these with their classmates tomorrow, this IS homework if you do not complete it in-class. This worksheet will be displayed along with the Paper Plate Interviews from last week. Finally, if there is time, you have an opportunity to get to know each other a bit with the HOT SEAT! Nyla gets first dibs if she wants to since her turn was cut short by last week's evacuation drill. Please remember to be respectful and not rude. Welcome to the new month!! We are getting into the full swing of things for the semester and the feeling of spring is about to start coming to the air.
ENGLISH 2 For all of the directions in today's process, click HERE. We finished-up our discussion and understanding of Eliza Sommers from yesterday's CHARACTERIZATION WORKSHEET and created a character sketch of her based on the information we got from the excerpts. We then began reading the play Antigone from our SpringBoard books on pages 316-319. The only characters present in today's reading were Antigone and Ismene. After reading this scene, student were assigned to write a character sketch on one of the sisters and supply references to which lines they used and based their inferences on. Due to the evacuation drill taking up a large portion of time in 6th period, we did not get an opportunity to read today. We will start tomorrow's class with an adjusted seating chart and jumping right into the play. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Leadership is all about RELATIONSHIPS! Because of that, we worked on building our relationships with one another with a partner interview! Students were to ask their assigned partner questions to get to know him/her and create a representation of them on a paper plate! They were to use colors, words, images, etc. to express what they learned about their partner. Here are the slides with a bit of the "why" for this course and the DIRECTIONS for the paper plate interview. |
