We took notes and discussed elements for EVALUATING SOURCES while in the research process. Not only should we always consider the information in that we copied in our NOTEBOOKS, we should also consider the other information covered in the slides above. After looking at the requirements for evaluating sources, we also looked at how to check the grade and level of validity for Wikipedia articles. This is also included in the presentation above. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We watched a VIDEO and used it to create a definition for the term "grit". We also discussed the concept of rigor and how it applies to grit. After this, students got into groups of three or four and started prepping for a group practice of the final; we will identify leadership qualities in a children's movie in order to see how the leadership traits we have looked at are presented to children in our society. Here are the REQUIRED ELEMENTS we should look for in the movie our group selected.

It was time for more vocabulary! Here are the DICTION concepts covered in today's lesson. FRESHMAN ENGLISH To jump right back in to the schedule of things, we recapped the information from yesterday and then took time to work on academic success and complete that work that we intended to do this week. Periods 1, 6: Today, we revisited the required ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENTATION and looked at an APHRODITE SAMPLE SPEECH from one of my past classes. In our discussion (and laughter at how ridiculous Aphrodite is), we saw how confusing things got when the elements of argumentation did not actually align and presented a weak argument. Here are the WRITTEN DIRECTIONS for today's activity. Periods 2, 4: We got to play lab rat for Ms. Pimenta! We partook in "book tasting" in the library in order to expose ourselves to new genres and identify where we might grow as readers. I will be gathering the list of who is reading which book for the next IRB Project. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today was all about will and intention. We first took some notes about those concepts as well as listed out a few things that some of us in the class typically intend to do, even if we never get around to doing them. This is significant when becoming student leaders because when we express our intentions to be positive influences on others, we must make sure that we choose to work toward the goals in those intentions. After the quick notes and discussions, we watched a VIDEO about Willie and his wrestling career. This video shows the importance of will/willpower when we state what our intentions are. ENGLISH 2
Today was about looking at an general rubric and defining more concrete data for each element that is to be scored on our speech. Students worked in small groups to break-down and translate one portion of the rubric and then shared it with the class as a whole by writing the specific details of what a speech with that grade would contain. The RUBRIC will be modified to express the new details that the classes broke down; this new format will be the version that is used during the speech to assess the grade. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Students broke into small groups today to work toward an element of MLK Jr. Assembly preparation. Several students drafted emails to different groups within the school to follow-up concerning involvement with the assembly, some worked on creating an outline and script for the assembly itself, some configured the layout of the gym, and others completed and hung-up posters throughout the school. Overall, today was EXTREMELY productive and successful. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back, everyone! I have genuinely missed seeing students over break!
ENGLISH 2 Today we began looking at our next summative assessment: Persuasive Mythology Speech. We only got through one of the documents planned for the day, but had great conversation around it! Here are TODAY'S STEPS to take with each piece of the document as well as a link to the UNIT OUTLINE itself. Additionally, here is the list of MYTHOLOGICAL DEITIES that I have provided each class to research and present on. Some deities on the list may not be available for certain classes depending on how many students may have already signed-up for that specific god or goddess. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We took our posters to the Activity Center to pain the quotes and information we outlined prior to leaving for break. Tomorrow will be a bit of a mix as some students work on their posters while others work on the script for the assembly. |
