IT'S BEEN A WHILE! I'm finally back at school and it feels so good to be back in with the students. I apologize for my absence--both in the classroom and on the website.
ENGLISH 2 Since I was out for the conclusion of one unit and the beginning of another, I want to make sure everyone (mainly me) is on the same page! Students filled me in on what they have worked on through the last two weeks. We then got right in to the requirements and expectations of this final unit of the year: SHORT STORIES! We looked at the UNIT OUTLINE and discussed the different elements that must be included in the assessment. Additionally, we went through a DIALOGUE sheet and discussed the three different ways that dialogue is helpful in developing a story instead of simply relying on narration. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Today was all about getting back to the concept of stereotypes and understanding the harm in viewing the possible negative attributes in a group as a whole. Here are my notes from today about why it is so important to think about the positives when considering different groups. PAGE 1 and PAGE 2

I left all of the Extended Writes that had been turned-in. I HAVE NOT graded them yet, so everything must be turned back in after you type your work into the computer. Today's work is very straight-forward: take whatever you have dome for your extended writes and type them into a new Google Document. Here is an important step though: if you missed an extended write, you need to make sure that you cover ALL of the information in the SUGGESTED ESSAY OUTLINE (the order is suggested, but the content is needed). Everything will need to flow, so try your best to make edits as you typed-up your EWs, go for it. Leadership --> if the material that Ms Rogers is covering doesn't align with our class, today is to be used for academics. The substitute knows that several of you have English essays to finish-up and some have science work; let that be our fall-back right now. Hey everyone, this week will still continue as planned, but I will not be back for the first portion of it. I am not sure when I will be back, but the substitute(s) will have all directions. There will be a substitute through at least Tuesday; I will continue to post the daily tasks.
All English classes, your tasks for this week remain the same as I told you on Friday: You will be typing-up your extended writes and creating a coherent essay from those. Because I left abruptly on Friday, though, your extended writes have NOT been graded. You will end-up turning those in again and they will be collected and graded once I get back. Leadership, your originally scheduled test for this Friday MIGHT be postponed until next week. If I am not back by Friday, it will be pushed-back. Ms. Rogers will be working with the substitute to continue with the curriculum if I am not able to provide the materials. Please work through the notes and discussions to better understand the essential elements of leadership. ENGLISH 2
Today was the final EXTENDED WRITE of the year! We worked through my EXAMPLE WRITING for today's prompt to see how to work through each step of the writing. I also focused students in on the fact that the extended writes are intended to be used as rough draft pieces for our analysis essay. I will be handing back all extended writes from this unit on Monday in order to work through revising our work since we will have a full understanding of the events in the novel Things Fall Apart. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP Since it was Service Thursday, there were a couple of different things going on. Four students went to Ms. Warden's class for game day with her students. The remaining students focused-in on academics and improving their grades. ENGLISH 2
We revisited yesterday's activity and connected the concept of conflicting opinions on cultural traits to Things Fall Apart. Classes discussed the concept that just because some people in a society are opposed to an idea, not everyone will be. After this conversation, we continued reading Things Fall Apart. Chapters 20-25 are due to be read before Friday. That will be the day of our final reading quiz. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP HERE are the notes that we discussed and took down today. ENGLISH 2
We took a break from reading the book today to focus on the concept of cultural misunderstandings. We worked through these DISCUSSION PROCESSES to think about how different cultural elements may be seen as obscure FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP The class was provided time to complete their complement sheet from yesterday. After 10 minutes of working on the compliments, we took NOTES on the character trait of respect. We worked through the process of thinking about the difference between what respect IS and what it LOOKS LIKE. At the end of the period, students were tasked with identifying how we could build a more respectful CHS. ENGLISH 2
Today, we took notes on the three different types of irony as well as the common confusion between some different types of irony and sarcasm and coincidence. We took down THESE NOTES and then listened to chapter 20. As we listened to the chapter, we focused on understanding a theme that has begun to develop in the text. My apologies for having not posted our materials for a few days. As the students know, I have been dealing with a medical problem in the family and I have been a little out-of-sorts lately.
ENGLISH 2 We read and discussed on Wednesday. It was a day of working through the novel. On Thursday, we worked through EXTENDED WRITE SHEET #6 and my EXAMPLE paragraph. Students listened to chapter 19 and worked on their EW#6 for the remainder of the period. On Friday, we had SYNTAX/DICTION VI after taking our TFA Reading Quiz #3 and Syntax/Diction V Quiz. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP On Wednesday, we finished the film we were watching and discussed several of the elements of leadership that we saw. Thursday was an academic focus day. I handed out assignment lists to all students from all of their classes. Students were instructed to identify their class of highest need and consider how to improve the grade. I met with each student to discuss their plan of action and get the ball rolling on some steps to improve academically. We hopped back into the curriculum on Friday with a focus on humility. The notes and slides for that day are coming shortly. There was a technical difficulty and the formatting was thrown-off. ENGLISH 2
Today, we took a few notes on fables and how they can be used to help us understand complex concepts in a simple way. As we worked through the notes, we discussed the Tortoise and the Hare, as well as some other fables with which we are familiar. After discussing some key elements of fables, we looked at the fable of tortoise and birds at the start of chapter 11 of Things Fall Apart. Here are the NOTES AND PROMPTS from today's lesson. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP We continued watching the film today and worked to identify different elements of leadership. ENGLISH 2
After letting students know that I may be a little "off" for a bit because of some personal events, we began reading part two of Things Fall Apart (chapters 14 and 15). We listened to the audio version and occasionally paused the text to discuss. FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP To start the period, we took a short, seven-prompt survey online. We began watching the Disney/Pixar movie "Finding Dory" to identify how popular films help highlight and endorse strong leadership traits. While we have not yet finished the curriculum, we can begin looking at how several strengths of an influential leader can be found in everyday popular culture elements.
